They Call it Work for a Reason

When I was in my twenties, I hated the idea that I had to work. All I wanted to do was write and play. I had no interest whatsoever in having to roll up my sleeves and make a living. I wished I was wealthy and could pursue various pastimes like a genuine Renaissance person. In my daydreams I was almost always alone, somewhere exciting, like Europe, and I had the time and money I needed to just be.

Woah. Fast forward and am I glad that dream never came true. Well in that incarnation. I’ve had the most wonderful, stimulating, and thrilling career. My life has been an absolute blast, albeit stressful at times (many times!)

A colleague and good friend once said to me, “They call it work for a reason.” I’ve often leaned back on that observation when I’m having a moment. No matter what you put your hand to do to make a living, there will always be a healthy does of “work” involved. True. But if you allow yourself to see it as a blessing and not a curse. If you show up every day with the intention of making it a good one, no matter how you feel, chances are something good is bound to happen.

Thank goodness my desire to live a life like Peter Pan didn’t pan out. I would have missed all the work that has transformed this dreamer into someone with a bit more character and color. If this is you, give me a thumbs up.
